While watching wildlife in the distance, I heard an unusual call from the greens of the ditch below. Then without a sound, this family of Virginia Rails hurried past my shoe and followed each other to the cover of the greens. A great brief chance morning meeting.
So Proudly We Hail
Proposed by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia, the Thirteen Colonies legally separated from Great Britain on July 2, 1776. John Adams told Abigail, "The second day of July 1776 will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I'm apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. Today we celebrate on July 4th, the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
In Polk County, the Village of Osceola once supported a mill and a brewery with the power of the Osceola Creek flowing to the St. Croix River. The cascading and the twenty-five foot drop still offers a scenic view to locals and visitors alike.
A Gem Among Us
I was submerged in the beauty of the powerful flow of Willow Falls on its journey to the St. Croix River. A large pipe, on the right of the falls, is a remnant of the 1924 dam which once diverted the flow until its removal in 1992. A true treasure with wonderful views from every perspective.
